OK, admittedly Cross Rhythms has been more than slow getting round to reviewing this album and we received some criticism that this didn't make our top 20 album list for 2006. In our defence, the mysteries of mainstream record deals have meant that this hasn't actually had a release in the UK! This is ironic since Skillet have developed their finest album yet. Since their 2004 release 'Collide' saw the band head into the mainstream, they have dropped their thematic approach to releases and instead have proved they have the ability to create music which is as powerful and compelling as anything out there on the rock scene. Skillet have always integrated a variety of musical styles to create something fresh. Here they incorporate strings, synths and the passionate co-vocals of Korey Cooper adding an extra dimension to John Cooper's earthy growl. The band's Christian heart is still expressed implicitly and explicitly. The ballad "Yours To Hold" sees Cooper reaching out a hand to a friend who is struggling whereas the opening rock attack of "Rebirthing" is a straight forward metaphor for new life in Christ. The upbeat "Better Than Drugs" and the moody title track explore the idea that knowing God is more satisfying than any high that this culture can offer. The band do a great job reaching out to those rock fans who are struggling, confused or simply lonely with songs that are encouraging, positive and anthemic. After the darker sounds and emotions of 'Collide', this album offers plenty of depth whilst exploring some fresh musical territory. I particularly like the poppier metal sound of the buddy song "Those Nights" and the powerful spoken/sung message of "Looking For Angels". Their seventh album looks like being their most accomplished yet and had I heard it in 2006, it would have made that top 20 list!
