Here's a mini album from a bunch of guys who play as if Blur and Oasis had never existed. Solid are a Belgian band who play old fashioned rock that sounds like an amalgam of Elton John and Queen plus a touch of the Hothouse Flowers. They feel called to evangelise the barren wastes of Southern Holland and Belgium and certainly the songs on their latest offering are message friendly. The themes are common enough - give a helping hand, always believe and keep on moving on - and so on. You can't fault their theology - nor their ability to sing in English. But poets and melody writers they are not. Perhaps something's been lost in the translation to make the songs pretty insipid. That's a shame because they have got some great musicians in the band - like Boudewijn Roman on lead vocals and Mark Willems on guitar. But there is no substitute for good songwriting. Keep working at it guys. Even Elton wrote a lot of naff songs before "Crocodile Rock".
