Drawing on all aspects of black music traditions, Sounds Of Blackness have, over the years, created some astounding music combining sensational grooves, tight group vocals and a selection of diva soloists. Underlying it all is a message that mixes positivity and faith and a modern black consciousness that has always made their music compelling. Some thought that after supreme vocalist Ann Nesby left the group it was unlikely they'd be able to recapture their previous form, however 'Unity' proves them wrong and also right! On the epic opening title track, it's Nesby's vocals that really sell your speakers with sound and again on the second cut "Heaven". It's good to have her back! Other highlights include the gospel blues of "Trouble" and the totally infectious "Try" which steals a Stevie Wonder riff to fine effect and features some great lead vocals from the big voiced Yulanda. As usual it's an eclectic collection of songs from the faux modern classical influences of "They That Wait" to the traditional gospel of "Over My Head". The results are impressive!
