I'm not entirely sure which genre Starflyer 59 drop into. Having talked to Mr Cummings a few weeks ago about the curious genre known as emo, I might suggest that Starflyer would fit into this category nicely. Wherever you place them, though, the Californian band definitely emits a British pop feel; perhaps a little Beatlesque at times. Frontman Jason Martin's subtle vocals are not unlike Thom York of Radiohead. Starflyer were one of Brandon Ebel's first signings and they have established themselves as one of Tooth & Nail's finest outfits. This five-track EP demonstrates the band's undeniable ability to evoke a mood. An intelligent mix of varied percussion tinkerings and jangly guitar riffs combined with Martin's expressive vocals makes SF59 one of Christendom's most distinctive sounds. Check out the slide guitar on "Happy Birthday John" and the serene synths on the moody "West Coast Friendship". The final track, curiously titled "Theme From Dromedary", is an instrumental that wouldn't sound out of place on the soundtrack for one of 007's outings. From start to finish, this is refreshing mid-tempo atmospheric pop rock. Andy Prickett's production is superb and sensitive to the band's mellow sound. 'Can't Stop Eating' is ideal for anyone who is looking for a standout in the overcrowded pool of American pop rock. Shame there are only five tracks!
