Apparently Kent-based Sustained have been in existence from around 2002. Now this is surprising as they have only released a mini-album 'Borrowed Time' (2006) and, after a long gap this album. They state "We feel the band name reflects the way that as Christians we are sustained by the indescribable power and love of God through Jesus Christ. Hebrews 1:3 is pretty much what we're talking about -the son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word." The band is comprised of Ben Whittle (lead vocals and bass guitar), Jeremy Young (rhythm guitar, keys, synth and backing vocals), Johnny Pawlett (lead guitar and backing vocals) and Richard Hillary (drums). They play alternative rock which displays their Switchfoot, Relient K and Athlete influences. Launching off with a scorching rocker in "Horizons" which belies its questioning lyrics "Is there hope for broken humanity?/Self help, self reliance/Only leads to insanity". There is another tub-thumper in "Sitting, Watching, Waiting" before they reveal their gentler side in the laidback "Why". It takes until the middle of the album before they briefly pick up their rock mantle again. One of my favourites is the acoustic "Hallelujah For Hope" which features vocal harmonies with stunningly beautiful female vocals by Threeforagirl (Imogen Mason, Eleanor Mason and Celia Christophers). They finish off with the enthusiastic "Love Will Triumph". As you might expect from the four year gap, this is a great leap forward from their debut. They have matured in songwriting, technical ability and the production is brilliant for an independent release.
