This album almost gets reviewed as a book rather than a CD although I suspect that readers will get less from it than listeners. The CD-sized hardback book is beautifully presented but the 60 or so pages are heavy on photographs and light on text and when we realise that the words come in three languages there is much repetition. The lyrics are also multi-lingual, with translations in the book, but this is what we have come to expect from Taizé. Collectors should be warned that this is a compilation album with 19 songs taken from seven previous releases from 'Veni Sancte Spiritus' (1993) to 'Venite Exultemus' (2001). The selections give a sense of how singing can support those who are searching for an inner life and for solidarity among people. The melodies are deceptively simple and you will find it hard to get some of them out of your mind, which may be no bad thing. Despite the many different languages sung the overall style is harmonious with some pleasing instrumental flourishes to add texture to the vocal lines. Those who know and love Taizé will enjoy this compilation, even if they have some of the earlier releases. New listeners will find this an excellent place to start.
