The relaxed strings and guitar opener, "Small Things Define" sets the scene well for this 2001 album by the American singer now based in Germany. In fact, "Small Things Define" would make Sixpence None The Richer fans feel right at home with its wistful poignancy. Elsewhere, there is the occasional uptempo rock track such as "Rainy Day Assembly" and "Skinny Little Line", though most of the material here is more laid back and uses a wide variety of instruments and arrangements to keep the listener engaged. The lyrics are thought-provoking and well written though Tess's faith doesn't seem to get mentioned. But if you're looking for a left of centre singer/songwriter who has clearly paid her dues, this is a listening pleasure.
