Unlike most bands, who slave away on heavy gigging schedules hoping to get noticed, it seems The Becoming have come from nowhere (well, Nashville actually) to be signed by Tooth & Nail Records. And, in truth, it does seem The Becoming are still trying to find their feet. There is quite a varying collection of songs from the almost gothic sounding "Silent As The Grave" to the poppy edge shown on "Your Love". This does sometimes stretch the cohesion of the album but the songwriting is solid enough to make it work. A key aspect of the band's sound is the contribution of keyboard/programmer Justin Carpenter. The keys give a full sound to songs such as opener "Dressed In Black" with its whirling synth intro and string section outro while lyrically the band show their passionate faith with songs such as "Your Love" declaring their death to sin and new life in Christ. Overall, 'The Becoming Vol 1' is a reasonable starting point.
