Those who know their Christian music history will recognise The Choir as one of the pioneering forces in Christian rock who down the years have brought an alternative edge to the whole CCM arena. Here Derri Daugherty, Steve Hindalong and co make a strong return with this, their 14th full-length album. The downbeat, multi-textured nature of this album does not signify depressing lyrics, but is a fine platform for the difficult topics the band tackle. On "Learning To Fly" they deal with the mystery of suffering in life in a way that exhibits the presence of hope, a hope that is evident throughout the album. Daugherty's vocals are on scintillating form and are an extra instrument when combined with the off-beat backing vocals from his band mates. Indeed, Derri's voice holds the album together. He has found his perfect partner in Leigh Nash, who in the final, gloriously haunting track "After All" makes a sublime guest appearance, rounding off the reflective songs with a meditative affirmation of God's presence throughout the mystery of life on this earth. Musically, however, they hint at showing-off. Particularly in "Laughter Of Heaven" where we are treated to a sonically sweeping opening. This is a record worthy of standing with any of their previous 13 full-length albums.
