What a relief. It seems such a long time since anyone had the courage to be truly creative with a 'Christian' album. No exhausting power ballads here, no obligatory proselytising or strident glory trails. The entreaty is far more subtle, far more considered. With their leaning towards an English country folk tradition, The Harbour Lights debut on a high, fronted by the quite magical (can I say that?) voice of Bethan Court. For those concerned by the preoccupation with the sacred/secular divide, take heart; 'Leaving Safe Anchorage' is an exemplar of how to break down those artificial barriers - surely worthy of the way in which Jesus handled truth and uncertainty: he entertained, challenged and offered us the way through parable, through metaphor. This is intelligent work. In their songs, the writers, Phil Baggaley and Ian Blythe, wrap us up in intimate meadows and throw us around on rolling seas, opening up forgotten paths and far horizons along the way - yet always taking us somewhere. There is hope for the journey in every unravelling tale - only, that we have to think for ourselves. The music comes beautifully together in the hands of guitarists Steve Canner and Rob Bullock with Mr Baggaley. Chris Pearson is on drums and percussion, and on keyboards, Ian Blythe (assisted here by Mark Edwards). There's a restlessness running though this album which is good for us. If they are 'live' in your area, you would do well to travel with them. Second best would be to wear out the CD.

I am looking for a copy of the CD by The Harbour Lights Leaving Safe Anchorage. Would actually like any and all of their CDs. I would like a copy of the lyrics for "Last Port of Call." Heard it on Christian radio and it stirred me deeply. I understand the original group has disbanded and reformed. I am having no luck finding a websites where I can obtain lyrics and copies of CDs. Tx kindly.

I doubt that anyone will ever see this, but I've been looking for The Harbour Lights' other album "Closed For The Winter". CAN ANYONE HELP ME!?!?!?

Having journeyed sideways and found myself in something of a desert, a friend made me listen to the Apple Day track and then lent me the album. This is soooo resettling and reaffirming. Am now ordering both their CDs with haste.

This band is special. This debut album is special. They have something, dare I say it, special!

A blend of unquestionable vocal talent with accomplished, polished yet, at times somewhat understated musicianship. I've seen them live a few times and they do not disappoint. This CD showcases their ability as the catchy songs flow from my speakers. Definitely a disc to leave in the CD player - ON REPEAT! And glue the tray shut!

As your man there Phil Thompson said "wear the CD out"... well I have done, son! Get me another copy!!

Spread the word.

Peace.

Lenny.

My friend ethused about The Harbour Lights and actually organised a local concert which we were happy to support. Absolutely brilliant! What more can I say. Both my wife and I play the CD constantly in the car and often find ourselves singing the songs when we walk into the house. Great CD and even better live - go see for yourself if they tour near you! A must.

Great review, and spot on in my book. There's far more to our faith than many Christian song writers seem to want to express. This albums a clear step in a different direction to most. Well worth a listen. CH

I've had my copy of Leaving Safe Anchorage for a few weeks now after seeing them live in Derby. I have to say, their music is fantastic. The entire album is an audio pleasure with none of the usual 'album fillers" here that you normally get on other CD's. The vocals are sung beautifully and by such a young voice, the band is fantastic, playing with such emotion, feeling and sensitivity. I played in a few groups in my youth, and you know when you've found something special...well "the Harbour Lights" have that special something. Buy the CD, you won't be dissappointed. JR
