The Hymn Makers series has produced numerous albums of hymns and this latest package ties up with the new edition of the Redemption Hymnal. It is a fine example of Kingsway's professional standards, not only in its selection of hymns but also in producing an excellent booklet offering a précis history about Pentecostal hymnody. The songs featured here are listed with the Hymnal number, tune, and composer. There is also a short history of each composer with bibliography of source material. What also impresses me is the wonderful poetry within the lyrics; Indeed "Dear Lord And Father Of Mankind" began as a poem by John Greenleaf Whittier in 1872. George Matheson's "O Love That Will Not Let Me Go" is beautifully written, rich in hope arising out of personal trials. "Breathe On Me Breath Of God" is a heart's cry for holiness by its author Edwin Hatch, which is still an anointed prayer for believers today. The renditions here by the Scottish Festival Singers conducted by Ian McCrorie at Old St Pauls Church, Edinburgh are adequate; the packaging superlative.
