After reaching number two in the charts with their gospel backing on the Madness hit "Wings Of A Dove", London-based The Inspirational Choir, directed by John Francis, signed to a CBS subsidiary and in 1985 released this collection of gospel classics, hymns and inspirational songs. From the groovy opening title track to the closing re-interpretation of the hymn "Abide With Me" with its soaring Brian May style guitar solo, the choir did a good job of offering a modern version of black choir music to the masses. Other highlights include versions of "Up Where We Belong" and "One Love (People Get Ready)" which effectively bridge the gap into the mainstream audience and moving a rendition of "Amazing Grace" and a jolly "What A Friend We Have In Jesus". Although this sounds a bit easy listening and lightweight in places, the overall vision of taking gospel music to the mainstream audience works well.
