We're all aware, I'm sure, of the stereotypes attached to modern worship songs - unoriginal four-chord wonders that look longingly towards the past rather than pushing into the future in any meaningful creative way. With that in mind, this digital EP from James Cave and Ewan King will come as a considerable shock, with its jaw-dropping fusion of genres, breathtaking musicality and often heartbreaking melodies. "Agnus Dei" kicks things off, demonstrating some of the Miles Davis-esque arranging that made them such a hit on the London jazz scene, before moving through sections that recall early Pink Floyd, accompanied by lavish vocal arrangements. The EP then journeys through the unrelentingly upbeat "Gloria", unabashedly experimental "Kyrie", to the beautifully ambient, almost Sigur Ros-like 'Benedictus', before climaxing with a flourishing arrangement of the familiar hymn "All Creatures [Of Our God and King]". Ultimately, my only complaint is that the experience lasts just 25 minutes. Releases like this don't come around very often, so let's hope that there's plenty more to come from the truly stereotype-busting jazz worship project.
