Reviewed by Alex Figgis Detroit's very own prog rockers are back! Produced by Terry Brown (IQ, Rush, Fates Warning) and featuring artwork by Hugh Syme (Queensryche, Megadeath, Arena), 'Presents Of Mind' is Tiles' second opus for German label Insideout Music. As one would expect, this latest offering is both well arranged and produced, where Terry Brown has encouraged and developed the band's own unique sound, resulting in 'Presents.' boasting a healthy and welcome progression of sound since 'Fence The Clear' (97). Tile's latest project reveals a diverse and intricate musical tapestry, where more complex and effective compositional ideas are realised. Though Pat DeLeon (drums), Jeff Whittle (bass) and Chris Herein (guitars) frequently demonstrate individual proficiency, they simultaneously remain well disciplined within the perimeters of each piece; effectively working together as a unit comprised of four equally distinct parts. Paul Rarick's vocals, whilst a little weak in places, are unique; conveying adequately the album's many moods and tones. Clearly at work within 'Presents.' are subtle musical dynamics that make for an intensive listening experience, enabling, the mind's imaginative capacity to be fully realised. Tiles' latest project is comprised of positive, life affirming music, with lyrics that captivate the listener; challenging one and all to reconsider life's meaning and purpose. For a positive, detailed and well executed work of art "Presents Of Mind" is a worthy addition to anyone's collection.
