The wide musical variety of African culture is covered amply in these cross-sections of roots and contemporary delights. The dazzling mixture covers the everyday sounds of these great musicians rooted in traditional rhythms and musical styles sometimes showing the intrusion of Western influences and instruments. The unique African style is always to the fore though, thankfully. Songs covered include cries of protest over disappearing cultural norms, other common concerns, gospel songs, jive numbers and traditional folk items. This kicks off with the wonderful Zulu Mbube choir Amadaduzo, previously reviewed in Cross Rhythms, a gloriously vibrant song of joy and peace "Siyabamukela". This CD has tracks by the Boyoyo Boys (sounds more Caerphilly than Soweta!) who were the inspiration behind the Paul Simon-'Gracelands' groundbreaker. Rollicking joyous sound it is too on the instrumental "Mthwalo" and "Sparks". Amadaduzo return with "Ayiko Indlela" which talks about the road to Heaven through Christ and the battles involved. 13 great tracks, watch out for the pulverising accordion-led sound of Lesotho traditional band Amatso Makaota - powerful!
