If you're really into world music, or at least Afro-beat, you'll know that azonto dance music had taken Ghanaian clubland by storm. As this album demonstrates, the Church has been quick to respond to the craze and this album offers 12 tracks by 12 different acts with names like The Gospel Revolutionaries, C-Boy and Oaks Of Righteousness. But before you rush off your order to Amazon be warned that all 12 singers, groups and rappers are utilizing the same backing track! That's the downside. The upside is that it's a good track with an undulating bass-driven groove which will definitely make you want to show off your moves on the floor. The best three variations on the azonto funk are the sung "Shout Hallelujah" by Hannah and the rapped "Who Be (ftg Emanuel)" by Zion Lynx while "Only A God Like You" by Mary Lola is growing on me. But my advice to Mercy And Grace Records who released 'Gospel Azonto' is that for Volume 2 they splash out on more than one track!
