If you’ve caught an earful of the last two The Experience samplers you might already have been down to your local Christian bookshop to pick up this one. As anyone who’s followed British Christian music will know, Dave Bilbrough is a faithful journeyman who down the years has written his share of praise and worship classics. So bringing in some of the best known names in worship ministry (Noel Richards, Paul Oakley, Robin Mark, Sue Rinaldi, etc) and some talented pop gospellers (Mal Pope, Sheila Walsh, Caroline Bonnett) to perform Dave’s best known worship songs is a great idea, particularly when programmer/producer Mark Edwards has given the Bilbrough oldies a decidedly colourful new coat of paint. Possibly the most arresting track of all is the title song, wailed with soulful assurance by Vanessa Freeman over a ricocheting garage groove, while “So Freely” with a socking rhythm over which Sue Rinaldi effortlessly glides helped by Phil Keaggy’s Bvs, “Free In The Love Of God” with Phatfish’s Lou Fellingham and Alan Rose turning in a joyfully rowdy rendition; and Mal Pope’s funky neo-R&B rendition of “Sound The Trumpet” are all delightful. Mr Bilbrough clearly has a powerful back catalogue as these bright new versions prove.
