This fascinating compilation is a salient reminder that alongside the hundreds of soul music obscurities plucked from the thriving '60s and '70s soul scene, tracks from all manner of pop and rock artists were also played in the clubs if they had the appropriate driving dance beat. So this 24-song album reminds us of that moment in history when The Newbeats, Jay & The Americans, Bobby Goldsboro, Kiki Dee and complete unknowns like Ann D'andrea, Flower Shoppe and Barnaby Bye were given exposure to the throngs in Wigan, Cleethorpes and a dozen more Northern Soul hotspots. The interest for Cross Rhythms readers is the inclusion here of "Ten Miles High" by David & The Giants, recorded long before the Southern rockers enjoyed their string of CCM hits. And pretty good it is too, with a punchy horn section adding drive to David Huff's gritty vocal. An intriguing moment of musical history.
