I approached this album with fear and trembling. Ever since the 70s punk revolution reformed my musical sensibilities, I have mistrusted anything that smacked of 'concept album'. And yep! That's basically what this is. 'Saviour' plots the story of God's passion for his people. Imagine the difficulty of producing a piece of work which encompasses the whole Bible but that is what producer Greg Nelson has attempted to do. Starting with God and Adam talking in the garden, 'Saviour' takes you right through to Revelation, stopping on the way to consider Christ and the cross. Spiritually, this work does capture God's heart helped by passionate vocal performances from Larnelle Harris, Wayne Watson, Twila Paris, Steve Green and Wintley Phipps. Musically it's a marriage of classical, choral and contemporary and like any marriage 'Saviour' has its ups and downs. It's high on drama and I would imagine a live performance would be stunning but in the confines of my study, it sometimes feels a little over the top! Still, if you enjoyed the version of 'Handel's New Young Messiah' that came out a while ago then you'll love this.
