The event which people have taken to their hearts at Greenbelt in recent years is out on tape again. For sheer diversity this is worth the money, lona start the set in atmospheric fashion with "lona"; Martyn Joseph weighs in with two tracks, of which "4 The Dollar" shows him at his most incisive; Armstrong and Sam Hill give strong vocal performances but the best is saved 'til last on side one with The Woebegones' excellent "I Hear A Train Coming". River City People open side two and appropriately are the only act to feature on three individual tracks, all great songs with "Each Day I Carry The Blame" and "Hush Little Baby" vying for outright superiority -"Hush..." wins by a short neck for me. And then comes the cabaret: Nanette Welmans' "My Baby Just Cares For Me" has the audience in raptures and has the same effect on tape too. Her "Swing Low" medley puts all those English Rugby Union players well in their place and Ben Okafor brings us back on an even keel near the end. If you were choosing a compilation of some of the most entertaining and thought-provoking artists around you could do little better than this. Long may the river flow.
