The new 'X' series is a great thing. Finally an alternative compilation with major label backing for those who don't get their kicks from the likes of 'WoW Hits'. So the prospect of a companion DVD is also great, right? Wrong. These guys may know how to rock but the majority of them make really boring music videos. So, out of the 14 videos here, only five make an (favourable) impression. The rest, if put on rotation at MTV2, would soon be forgotten amidst the much more inventive stuff that the secular world produces. Switchfoot's "You Already Take Me There" shows the most originality, using an obviously low budget to maximum (and hilarious) effect. Relient K and MxPx also stand out by injecting some attitude and personality, turning so-so concepts into great fun videos. The OC Supertones deserve a mention for their high energy antics, as does TobyMac, whose video looks like it cost the same as all the others put together, and does a good job of showing how cool he is. At the other end of the spectrum is Kutless, who play their song in a hangar and jump around. Lots. Come on guys, get some new ideas!
