One of the wonderful things about being an ancient wrinkly who's been listening to Christian/gospel music for 60 odd years is that there is always a new song and a new artist to discover, one who will not only touch a listener with their creative excellence but with the potential to transport you to a place where you can experience God's presence. This is the case with Vicki's "Free To Be" song. It turns out Vicki is only "new" to me. This EP was released in 2021 and I've subsequently discovered Vicki recorded a full length album 'Daddy' in 2013. (You'll be reading a review of that another day.) There are three songs here - all presumably self-written - and a cover but it's the title track which is truly special - a mid tempo heartfelt declaration of the liberty we can only find in Christ sung in gospel style. Vocal coach Lawrence Johnson (yep, the LCGC/Nu Colours man) has helped Vicki find soul power and interpretive eloquence in her vocals. Stuart Croxford Neile delivers a perfect, understated production. As a worship artist/concert performer I would suggest Vicki is up there with the very best in the UK scene.
