Cross Rhythms has long been a supporter of Darren Mulligan. We were impressed when he was the frontman/songwriter with indie band Remission Flow, and even more impressed when he and his wife relocated to Nashville and, with a band of US musicians, emerged as the linchpin of We Are Messengers. Mulligan's band proceeded to score a series of Christian radio hits in his adopted homeland. Clearly, We Are Messengers' early success is no flash in the pan. The outstanding song and performance on this five-song EP is "Maybe It's OK", a brilliant number explaining that it's God's grace, not our performance, which is the central thing in our spiritual journey. There will undoubtedly be a few hardcore legalists who'll view the song as an invitation to antinomianism, but most of us will find the song and Mulligan's performance of it profoundly encouraging. There are other good songs here. The title track opener is memorable, while "The Devil Is A Liar", dealing as it does with the Accuser Of The Brethren, touches on similar ground to "Maybe It's OK". Yep, another winning release from WAM.
