Maurice Durufle died in 1986 leaving a body of distinctive music for posterity. Of particular interest is his choral works which were liturgical in nature, intended to be used in Catholic services as well as on other occasions. An extreme perfectionist, Durufle published a mere 10 works during his lifetime. Nevertheless he remains a major composer of 20th century choral music. The strength of his compositional technique was his ability to fuse many diverse elements into a sensual and spiritual whole. Durufle's was less a unique voice, more a particular dialect of a familiar language of liturgy and worship: recognisably French and definitely Catholic, Durufle's music is very much within the mainstream of formal church music, bathed as it is in a stream of tradition which has Gregorian Chant as its source. Durufle's choral music was as far removed from the experimental and exotic music of his contemporaries such as Messiaen as one could get. And yet Durufle's own personality and beliefs are evident in his writing. His joy of the Catholic liturgy is apparent. This is music which is the antithesis of mere formality and conformity; the soul is genuinely lifted up towards God. Unusually, the "Requiem" bypasses the usual vision of judgment and punishment, concentrating rather on a vision of eternal peace and rest for the saints. A balm for the soul in these troubled times, perhaps. Similarly, the "Messe cum Jublio" is a vibrant and joyful celebration of Communion. Beautiful writing for choir and organ. I defy you to remain unmoved either by the music or this wonderful performance from Westminster Cathedral, London. Recommended without reservation.
