I know there are some people who when they get their new copy of Cross Rhythms turn straight to the review pages to read about all the albums that get "bad" reviews. So here you are reading this! And shame on you! Why? Because it's very difficult to review albums like this one from Who Me?. And think of how the band feel having their hard work ripped apart like this! On one level, I feel it's my obligation to explain to you, dear reader, that this is a dire offering whilst at the same time wanting to avoid hurting the band's feelings. The best way to describe this album sound-wise is that all the songs sound dated so they could have come straight from the Pentecostal hymnal circa 1962 (I'm not exaggerating here}, and the songwriting is littered with old-fashioned religious language. Similarly, the tunes sound dated, so the overall effect is quite surreal. On top of this the three girl vocalists who harmonise here have a sort of '60s reverb effect that adds to the dated quality of the sound. Whilst spiritually, I will always applaud a group who want to sing of their faith and reach others, and whilst I cannot deny that there are probably friends and fellow church members up in Scotland where Who Me? live who will buy this and say encouraging things to the band, objectively, this sounds awful. After this debut. I am confident that from here the only way for the band is up!
