There can be few people who aren't familiar with the charming musical tale of the drummer boy who presents his drumming gift to the baby Jesus. Since it was written in 1941 (by classical music composer Katherine Kennicott Davis) "Little Drummer Boy" has been recorded over 230 times in every style imaginable. (Back in 2007 Cross Rhythms were particularly taken with a version by Jars Of Clay). With such a recording history, it takes a brave artist indeed to tackle "Little Drummer Boy" particularly a singer like Nashville's Yancy whose stated aim is to make music to appeal to both children and adults. The fact that she succeeds so brilliantly here says much for Yancy's studio savvy. Some tasty programming, the singer's poignantly effective vocal, a gutsy drum break and (gasp) a little bit of rapping, all come together to make this rendition an endearing holiday single. And her versions of "Emmanuel" and "Silent Night" aren't bad either.
