Yancy is a female American equivalent of the UK's children's worship maestro Ishmael. Like Bob Dylan's 'Under The Red Sky', this album began as lullabies for the songwriter's child and evolved into a broader worship offering. The album opens with "The Joy", chiming keys sparkle behind Yancy's vocal - "Your joy is my strength," she sings. Scripture is central here; "Safe" cleverly combines "Be not afraid, be not dismayed" of Joshua 1:9 with Proverbs 18:10 "The Lord is a strong tower", while "Creator" must surely bless the Lord with "You know all my freckles and all my silly faces/I am fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God". "Trust" sets Proverbs 3:5-6 to a catchy finger-picking acoustic guitar melody and lyric ("Even when this world is wrestling me/I will trust you and leave the rest to thee"), while "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" joins more sensitive acoustic guitar and piano with blues harmonies. Nothing if not innovative, the album comes with a companion app aimed at helping parents teach the Scriptures behind the songs to their children. Yancy's slogan is "Music that makes Jesus loud" - you could add to that "and relevant to children too."
