Here the Brooklyn-based worship collective Young Oceans offer reworkings of previously released material this time bringing in many of their high profile friends including All Sons & Daughters, Leeland, Evan Wickham, Harvest, Sarah MacIntosh and Ellie Holcomb. Whilst Young Oceans' music usually falls into the meditative, atmospheric rock category, 'Voices Vol 1' addresses repeated requests from fans to adapt their songs for congregational settings. Indeed, many songs take on a hymn-like aura with rich and thought-provoking lyrics. Like many albums with multiple guest vocalists, results can be hit and miss. Thankfully most songs here hit the mark and the album feels cohesive and clearly draws the listener into worship. One of the real gems is sung by Harvest, who provides vocals for three songs. Her wonderful voice is unique, most noticeably on powerful album opener "Until These Tears Are Gone". Additionally, "Great Is Our God" featuring All Sons & Daughters crescendos perfectly with memorable cries of praise. All in all, this album can only increase the reputation and spiritual penetration of this adventurous collective.
