Their first two albums weren’t to everybody’s taste but for a whole generation of American teenage girls their hooky teen pop addressing the problems and pains of adolescence were a musical lifeline. But, as happens so often with musicians who’d begun with a predominantly teen audience, come the third album and a core audience growing older each day considerable stylistic change is called for. For my money Alisa Girard, Chrissy Conway and Kristin Swinford, thanks in great part to exemplary production from Tedd T, sound better than ever. There are more chunky rock guitars and less programming than on previous efforts while the girls have lost none of their ways with wistfully memorable hooks and lyrics that deftly define the limits of dating, the need for a biblical self-image, the scourge of youth suicide and, on the captivating “You Get Me”, the heart’s desire to worship God. All in all an outstanding and inspiring pop album.
