If you've got a classic album to showcase, and DC Talk's 'Free At Last' is unquestionably a classic, it's hard to go wrong with the formulaic pattern of big-budget 'on the road' pop vids. All the band's top numbers - "Jesus Is Just Alright", "I Don't Want It", "The Hardway" are performed with a live band featuring a seriously funky bassman, with the flashing lights, flashy dancing and stage diving extravaganza intercut with other items, like the sizzling on the beach promo-version of "Jesus Is Just Alright" and lots of interview material. Occasionally it gets slightly forced, being photographed with a kid (sorry, "homey") for a staged publicity shot seems to leave everybody embarrassed while their unplugged version of "I Wish We'd All Been Ready" though allowing Larry Norman a little deserved credit sounds under-rehearsed. But these are quibbles. The music - that artful blend of hip hop and pop hooks is utterly captivating - while the band's sincerity, be it recalling old times back at the Bible College where they met or those poignant images of prison and prisoners in the snow in the "Hardway" promo, can't be faked. Good stuff.
