| Foodbank volunteers are carrying out £30-million-worth of unpaid work a year, new research has revealed, writes a staff reporter. Figures published this week by the Trussell Trust and the Independent Food Aid Network (IFAN) show that volunteers are donating nearly 3 million hours each year to distribute food to those in need of emergency help, and a further 1.2 million hours to carry out administrative tasks at foodbanks. If volunteers were paid the national living wage -- currently £7.50 per hour for over 25s -- the cost would be at least £30.8 million, the study estimates. | |

| Christians have become victims of genocide in Nigeria, Iraq, and Syria, a charity has found. A report due to be published yesterday, by the Roman Catholic Aid to the Church in Need, found that, in almost all the 13 countries surveyed “the situation for Christians has declined since 2015 as a result of violence and oppression.”...The report Persecuted and Forgotten found that, in Nigeria, the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram, in collusion with Fulani herdsmen, carried out a campaign of butchery, desecration of church buildings, and mass expulsion of Christians. In one expulsion of Kafanchan, 71 Christian-majority villages were destroyed and 988 people killed. | |

| Schools in the UK will be rated for how ‘trans-friendly’ they are by an education review group, it was announced at the end of September. Bernadette John, a director at the Good Schools Guide, announced the move and said the issue of transsexualism in schools has been ‘building up’ in recent months. John said ‘inspectors’ from the guide will certainly be asking headmasters in the future about their treatment of transsexual pupils. | |

| A record number of children have sought help from Childline over suicidal thoughts. The NSPCC help and advice service gave 62 counselling sessions each day last year for children tormented by thoughts of ending their lives. Children as young as 10 were reaching out for help after contemplating suicide, it said. Overall, 8% of children’s 295,000 counselling sessions last year were for suicidal thoughts. | |

| A quarter of young women believe sending sexual pictures is a ‘normal part of relationships’, while 16% have felt pressure to send such images, a poll revealed in mid-September. The figures from Girlguiding also expose concerning levels of sexual harassment at school and a strong belief that the advertising industry should curb its use of sexualised images. | More than a quarter of English secondary schools are failing to offer religious education, research by the Department for Education (DfE) indicated in September. Data gathered by the DfE and obtained under a Freedom of Information request shows that 26% of secondary schools are not offering RE lessons. Among academies, which comprise most secondary schools, 34% do not offer RE to 11-13 year olds and 44% are not offering it to 14-16 year olds. | |
