| The UK could be heading for a double dip recession if current economic trends fail to improve, research has indicated. The economy looks set to shrink during the final quarter of the year, with businesses becoming increasingly pessimistic about trading products, according to business services firm BDO. The group said its optimism index, which reflects how businesses expect trading to develop, had fallen to 93.1. | |

| The government has introduced legislation aimed at reforming redundancy payments for 500,000 civil servants. Ministers say that they want to cap the value of severance deals to a year of salary for compulsory job losses and to 15 months for voluntary exits. The current scheme, paying out more than six years’ salary in compensation to some, is unsustainable, they argue. Ministers believe the current civil service redundancy terms are prohibitively expensive and mean to change them. | |

| Network Rail (NR) has announced six figure bonuses for its top directors, sparking a storm of protest led by Transport Secretary Philip Hammond. Last month, Mr Hammond wrote to NR urging restraint and pointing out the company’s top management already enjoyed “handsome” annual salaries. But yesterday, NR said its top directors were getting bonuses totaling more than £2.25 million, including £641,000 for chief executive Iain Coucher whose annual salary is £613,000. | |

| Benefit claimants who refuse to work will face sanctions under radical changes to the welfare system. And all those receiving incapacity benefit will now be reassessed in a bid to get more jobless residents back into the workplace. As he unveiled the plans for reform, Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith said he had inherited a “broken system”. He told how almost five million people were on benefits and 1.4 million under-25’s were neither working nor in full-time education. The Government also wants to make other changes including creating a single programme aimed at getting people back into work. And older people will be allowed on to a welfare-to-work programme immediately rather than having to wait a year, as is currently the case. | |

| Employers are being urged to make themselves aware about new employee sickness legislation Rules governing the so-called ‘fit notes’ – designed to replace sick notes – came into force on April 6. It means that instead of giving patients a sick note saying they are too ill to work, doctors will be asked to provide advice on whether a person may be fit for work with some help and support, and what employers can do to assist. The legislation aims to cut the cost of sick leave for employers and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) estimates it will benefit the economy by around £240 million over the next 10 years. | |

| People who are looking to work from home are the latest targets of scammers, according to research from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT). The findings show that the scammers attempt to swindle money by offering profitable business opportunities or start-up advice. According to the survey, in the past 12 months 17 per cent of the adult population has been targeted, and the number of incidents is rising. | |

| More than a third of graduates have claimed Jobseekers Allowance in the past year, research revealed today. A survey of 500 recent graduates by recruitment website totaljobs.com showed that only six per cent had found a graduate job, with two-thirds taking work just to pay bills. Thirty-six per cent had claimed Jobseeker’s Allowance in the last year, of which half had claimed for longer than six months. Another survey recently found nearly 150,000 graduates had delayed searching for work by undertaking further study. | |

| Business leaders have renewed their attack on public sector pensions. The CBI said a more affordable system was needed if the “trillion pound burden” on the tax payer was to be contained. A report claimed there was an annual unfunded public sector black hole of £10 billion, partly because staff contributions were “out of kilter” with payout levels. Public sector pension benefits were on average worth 26 per cent of salary every year, far higher than private sector norms, it was claimed. | |

| The Government has vowed to fight any new attempt to scrap Britain’s opt-out from Europe’s maximum 48-hour working week. The pledge came as the European Commission launched a review of working time rules almost a year after the last effort to curb the opt-out was defeated in Brussels. The Commission said its opening of consultations with workers’ and employers’ representatives was just a first step and there were no plans “at this stage” for plans to amend current arrangements. | |

| Firms could be required to report on efforts they are making to increase the number of women in senior management jobs, the Government has announced. It follows a survey of more than 1,000 adults which showed that almost two out of three believed there were not enough female directors in big business. The Government Equalities Office said that at the current rate of progress it will take 60 years for women to gain equal representation on the boards of the top 100 companies. | |

| The impact of the recession on workers has been “much deeper” than official unemployment figures showed, with more than 1.3 million people losing their job since the start of the down-turn, according to a new report. And a study by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development showed that two thirds of people made redundant were paid an average of 28 per cent less when they found another job. | |

| According to a report in the Daily Mail, violent attacks take place in NHS hospitals every three minutes since they were turned into ‘war zones’ by 24-hour drinking. Previous figures showed only the number of attacks on NHS staff numbering 55,993 in 2007/8. Freedom of information requests have revealed the scale of violence on patients and staff combined. The 116 Trusts which provided figures for 2007 revealed 82,600 violent incidents. Extrapolated across the NHS, the figure would be around 166,000 in the year. | |

| Christians in employment in the UK will no longer be able to act according to their consciences – after a landmark Employment Appeal Tribunal case declared at the end of November that the rights of homosexual couples trump those of people of faith and conscience. Gary McFarlane, a 48-year-old solicitor and part-time relationship counselor with relate (Avon), was dismissed by the charity for failing to give an unequivocal commitment to help same-sex couples improve their sex lives. Mr. McFarlane claimed unfair dismissal and discrimination. | |
