More than 140,000 manufacturing jobs will be lost this year, a new report warned today. The Engineering Employers Federation said research amongst almost 800 companies made “grim reading”, with warnings that the outlook could get worse.

Unemployment will soar to 3.4 million as the financial crisis deepens, experts predicted today. The official unemployment total reached a 10-year high of 1.86 million last October and some analysts expect the figure to increase to two million when new figures are published on Wednesday. Independent forecasting group, Ernst & Young ITEM Club, has predicted the figure will pass 3.25 million by the end of 2010, hitting 3.4 million in 2011.

Emergency funding should be extended to manufacturing firms if the Government is serious about helping the “real economy”, a report has urged. The Work Foundation said that because the strength of the UK’s financial services sector was now in question, manufacturing represented one of the best chances for an economic upturn. TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said “This is a welcome report that shows the importance of manufacturing for the economy.”

Up to 16,000 staff at Royal Mail may face redundancy in an efficiency drive. According to the Daily Mirror, the post provider is planning to cut costs by 10 per cent of its 160,000-strong workforce. Royal Mail is offering staff a choice of voluntary redundancy, part-time work or switching locations, the paper said. A Royal Mail spokesman said no job loss announcement has been made, but it was working on modernisation plans.

Official figures are expected to confirm that the number of people out of work rose again in December. Data is expected to show that jobless claims rose by 85,000, following November’s rise of 75,700. The unemployment rate is set to have hit 6.1 per cent in the quarter to November - or more than 2 million people - from six per cent in the three months to October. It has been predicted that unemployment will hit 3.35 million by the end of 2010.

The Number of frontline police officers is falling, researchers claim, The Centre for Crime and Justice Studies at King’s College, London, found there were nearly 1,500 fewer constables in England and Wales last year compared with 2006 – a fall of more than one per cent. The number of Police and Community Support Officers (PCSOs) has doubled.

Postal workers today complained they were being pressured into walking faster to complete their rounds under cost-saving measures. The Communication Workers Union Said delivery staff were being told to walk at a speed of 4mph, an increase over a previous target of 2.4mph. The union said delivery workers were being pressed to complete “unrealistic” rounds to gain financial savings. The Royal Mail denied the claims.

The Government is ruling out any moves to privatise the Royal Mail, days before the publication of a long-awaited review into the future of the postal group. An independent study by Richard Hooper, a former deputy chairman of media watchdog Ofcom, is expected to be made public in the coming days. It is expected to recommend modernisation for the service.

Fire services could save up to £200 million a year through increased efficiency, cutting days lost through sickness and using smaller, cheaper appliances. The Audit Commission said that if all 46 services followed the examples of Merseyside and Greater Manchester, more cash could be invested in fire prevention. They were praised for changing shifts patterns in line with demand, or cutting the number of staff on duty when fires were least likely.

More than one in three workers are worried about their jobs because of the economic downturn, with many experiencing increased levels of stress. A survey of 1,000 adults by Bupa showed that more than a quarter were putting in longer hours because of concerns over job security. One in three of those worried about their job were losing sleep.

Companies in England and Wales are making illegal criminal records checks on staff applying for jobs such as gardeners or bricklayers, it was reported today. Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks are used by firms and charities to identify people who are not suitable to work with children or vulnerable adults. Requests by employers have been made to the CRB for jobs such as train drivers or bricklayers, which means employers are learning about spent convictions that should not be disclosed.

Workers’ confidence about the security of their jobs has hit a new low, according to research today. A survey of 2,000 adults by Lloyds TSB showed that almost a third believed their job was less secure than a year ago, while 61 per cent thought they were the same, with just one in 10 saying they were better. Almost two thirds said employment prospects were worse.

McDonald’s will launch a recruitment drive today to fill 4,000 new “McJobs” following strong UK growth. The fast food giant said it was serving an extra two million customers a month compared with last year, defying the high street downturn. Takings in the UK rose by about 10 per cent in the first half of this year, while global sales have increased by 6.1 per cent since April.
