More than two million workers are not getting their legal holiday entitlement, with many not having any paid leave at all, according to a study. The TUC said one in 12 UK workers was missing out amid unrealistic workloads, and employers deliberately denying holiday requests or not keeping up to date with the law. The analysis showed that workers are losing out on nearly £3 billion worth of paid leave a year. Workers are entitled to 28 days’ paid leave by law.

Most people have suffered from stress at work, but managers do not know how to deal with mental stress issues, research shows. A survey of more than 500 managers found that one in three believed employees should not discuss mental health, while many said they were not equipped to deal with the issue. Half of managers in larger firms admitted more should be done and most wanted training on how to deal with mental health.

Ethnical-certification companies are failing to combat an epidemic of forced labour at the base of the tea and cocoa industries world-wide, researchers at the University of Sheffield have found. In a study published last week, academics reported that agricultural workers in the cocoa industry in Ghana, and the tea industry in India, were paid very low wages and were routinely subjected to multiple forms of exploitation.

The gender pay gap is widest when a women reaches 50, at an average of more than £8,400 a year according to a new study. Full-time female workers are paid less than men at every stage of their career from when they turn 18, research by TUC showed. The average 18 to 21-year-old working full-time starts her career on the back foot financially, earning £1,845 less than her male peers, it was found.

Unemployment has increased by the biggest amount in almost five years, new figures reveal. There was 1.47 million people out of work in the quarter to December 2017, an increase of 46,000 giving a jobless rate of 4.4%. The quarterly rise was the biggest since early 2013, although unemployment is 123,000 lower than a year ago, according to the Office of National Statistics.

Many GPs across Britain are working above safe levels, leading doctors have said. The Royal College of GPs said family doctors have a “relentless” workload. The comments come after a survey of UK GPs found that each deals with 41.5 patients a day, according to a GP magazine. Pulse found that one in five GPs (20%) is dealing with double this number. Patient contacts include face-to-face and telephone consultations, home visits and e-consultations.

Ignoring emails until the end of the day makes employees feel overloaded with work, increasing stress levels, according to research. A study suggested that messages should be checked regularly throughout the day to help workers feel in control rather than an email “slave”. Dr Emma Russell, of Kingston Business School, said it was a “myth” that workers should limit checking emails to a few times a day, or that emails were a time-wasting distraction.

The NHS has more than 100,000 vacant posts, Labour has estimated. The full-time equivalent vacancy rate across England’s acute, community and mental health trusts is 9%, Labour’s shadow health secretary said. This is a rise from 8.4% last year, Jonathan Ashworth MP found. Information obtained by the party from 82 NHS trusts found that the average nurse vacancy rate was 12.2%.
