Near-death experiences (NDEs) are far more common than most people realise. They are reported by men, women and children regardless of nationality, religion or education level. One Gallup poll showed 8 million adult Americans have experienced one. Other estimates suggest between four and nine per cent of the general population have experienced a NDE.

In June this year, the NSPCC and the Children’s Commission published an extensive report titled I wasn’t sure if it was normal to watch it… The research undertaken by Middlesex University included a survey of children aged 11-16 and showed that by the age of 12, 28 per cent had viewed pornography and by the age of 15 that had risen to 65 per cent. In terms of inadvertent viewing or deliberately seeking porn, the split was about 50/50.

New research from the Christian thinktank Theos has shown some Christian parents are not doing enough to help their children to know Jesus. According to the survey, only 36 per cent of Christian parents are keen that their offspring share their faith. When only those who attend church at least once a month were considered, the findings revealed 69 per cent of Christian parents were keen their children came to faith.

The 2016 Ofcom report on media use and attitudes suggests that parents might be holding off buying of a phone for children by giving into requests for gaming platforms or tablets, which they can feel more control over. But whatever platform children are using, they are definitely spending more time online, with average usage for 3-to-4-year-olds now being over eight hours a week, and 5-15-year-olds 15 hours a week.

The NSPCC has reported a huge jump in the number of people being bullied online. It has gone up 88 per cent in four years, with more than 4,500 children calling NSPCC’s Childline in 2015/16 compared to more than 2,400 in 2011/12. Nearly one-third of those contacting NSPCC said they’d experienced bullying on a gaming or social networking site. The extent of bullying via social media profile pages ranged from insults about looks, to death threats.

A new study has found that many churches, especially those with smaller congregations, are failing to offer any youth work provision, and those that do are concerned about the effectiveness of what they offer. Youthscape Centre for Research surveyed 2,054 churches across the UK. The findings are detailed in the Loosing Heart report which was launched at Lambeth Palace in December.
