There were 6,606 new HIV infections diagnosed in the UK during 2003, but this figure is expected to rise to 7,000 after all data is collected..Since 1995, all sexually transmitted infections have soared, with a threefold rise in chlamydia to 89,818 cases in 2003, a doubling of gonorrhoea to 24,309 cases and an elevenfold increase in syphilis to 1,575 cases.

Almost half of all motorists do not trust a garage to charge an honest price, according to new research released by the car care company motoreasy. Around one out of six motorists have felt pressurised to have work carried out on their car. A further 10% admitted that they had been forced to pay for work they have not approved.

A case of identity theft is occurring every four minutes in the UK, according to research published today. After plans by the Home Office for ID cards were unveiled in Parliament, a survey by Capital One showed that 77% of people are concerned about identity theft and 22% would like some expert help to protect themselves from it. Identity fraud costs the UK more than £1.3 billion a year and projections suggest that by the end of 2004 there will be 130,000 cases - equating to one every four minutes.

Council leaders are being urged to reconsider the amount of money available for housing alterations after a report found one in three households include someone with special needs. A study carried out for Stoke-on-Trent City Council revealed almost 35% of households had at least one member with a long term illness health problem or disability. Outside Research and Development, which carried out the research, said this figure was the highest they had ever unearthed and compared to a national average of 26.6%.

A record number of people started teacher training courses this year, according to figures published today. More than 34,400 people were beginning mainstream teacher training in England this year - which is the highest figure since 1975, according to the Teacher Training Agency.

Only Conservative MSP's voted against the legislation, which they branded an example of "the nanny state taken to the extreme", and called instead for a voluntary code to be introduced.
