| A quarter of rural Anglican churches have less than ten worshippers on a Sunday according to a new Church of England report. It also found that half of all rural Church of England places of worship have less than 20 faithful on a Sunday. The attendance figures, coupled with the £160 million rural parishes spend to maintain their properties every year, have prompted the Church to consider only opening some churches on special occasions like Easter, Christmas, weddings and funerals. | |

| Christianity could completely disappear from parts of the Middle East within five years according to ‘The Aid to the Church in Need’ document. It says if the exodus of Christians from Iraq continues at existing levels Christianity will be wiped out in the country by 2020. | Where it is legal, physician assisted suicide (PAS) "seemingly induces more self-inflicted deaths than it inhibits", according to a new US study. The data from the study show that PAS is associated with an 8.9 per cent increase in total suicide rates. The authors conclude that PAS does not inhibit non-assisted suicide but is "associated with an increased inclination to suicide in others", thus undermining one of the main arguments of assisted suicide advocates. | |

| Instead of providing security against hunger, the ‘welfare safety net’ is in some cases creating ‘insecurity and destitution’, according to a new report. ‘Restoring Faith in the Safety Net’, published by Church Action on Poverty, documents eight key holes in the safety net, many of which are leaving large numbers without income for months. The report reveals that up to £1.5bn of benefits and £560m of tax credits are underpaid in error, leading to hundreds of thousands of people missing out on money they are entitled to. | |
