| A widely reported survey by consultancy firm The Gild has found that young people today are the most socially conservative since the Second World War. The survey of more than 2000 people, released last month, found that 59% of the ‘Generation Z’ respondents (aged 14 and 15) said they have “conservative” views on same-sex marriage, transgender rights and cannabis legislation. The news sparked interest because 83% of millennials (born 1980-2000) and 85% of Generation X (born 1965-1980) said they were “quite” or “very liberal”. Only those respondents born before 1945 were found to be more socially conservative than the 14 and 15 year olds. | |

| Almost 150 people in Ireland have obtained legal recognition of their self-determined gender in the past year. Since legislation was passed last year, Department of Social Protection figures show that gender recognition certificates have been issued to 149 people. The Irish legislation, which reflects UK law, permits over-18s to identify as the gender of their choice, without validation from a medical professional. It is the fourth country in the world to allow this. | |

| The Office for National Statistics has released figures that show more people aged 16 to 24 now identify as bisexual (1.8%), than those who identify as gay or lesbian combined (1.5%). | A sperm bank has introduced a mobile phone app, believed to be the first of its kind, for women to select a sperm donor of their choice to father a child. London Sperm Bank Donors, nicknamed the ‘order a daddy’ app, allows women to ‘browse’ potential fathers based on desired characteristics, including physical traits and education level. Critics say that this app promotes eugenics and further undermines and trivialises parenthood, making both father and child a commodity. | |

| UK adoption figures have dropped by 12% over the past year, in what is thought to be a failing of the government’s adoption policy, with more children going to foster parents and kinship carers. Although figures had risen over the past few years, after David Cameron introduced reforms, the number of children adopted fell from 5,360 in 2015 to 4,690 in 2016. | |
