AVB, otherwise known as the Acappella Vocal Band, arrive on the CCM scene when acappella, accapella (or any of the other spellings) is quite definitely This Year's Flavour. And as the craze for unaccompanied gospel harmonies extends to both white (Clad) and black (Take Six) music it seems fairly astute for AVB to pitch their sound in between the black and white categories. In fact their sound is nice and tight without having anything of the dazzling jazz fluidity of Take Six, being often a kind of polished up recreation of black gospel quartet singing with a touch of the Four Freshmen/Beach Boys intruding. My favourite track is 'Father' which in sound and lyrical content could have been a doowop cut in the Bronx 30 years back. The playing time is short and some of the songs are a trifle dull. But if your tastes veer to harmony that's rich, fulsome and unadorned with 48 tracks of backing, catch this team from Tennessee.
