If your fond recollection of the panpipes at full gut-wrenching throttle is the Andes-inspired ‘Catcherpaya’, by Incantation, then stick to misty-eyed nostalgia, because this insipid offering is wretched. It compares less favourably to James Last interpreting Shostakovich. The choice meal that is true, passionate pan piping, is swapped for sell-by-date slop, in a mish mash of orchestral dressing. Taken out of context and placed in a foreign world, the pan pipe is exploited into performing bland hymns and choruses from across the middle of the road Christian globe, and watching this wily instrument being chased by the hounds of Christian commercialism leaves the reviewer in despair. How can this be allowed? No doubt I’ll hear this in my local Christian bookshop, no doubt I’ll question why they are endorsing such dross, no doubt they’ll say they’ve sold buckets of the CD to the pampered masses…no doubt I’ll walk out.
