One definition of what makes a classic, particularly in the classical genre, is when the potential listener is faced with a choice of recorded versions like, for instance, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's most popular oratorio 'Elias'. The version under review is a re-issue of a well-received release from 1993 directed by Philippe Herreweghe with Petteri Salomaa in the title role. It is the full work lasting over two hours and spread across two discs rather than a shorter highlights. It is sung in German and neither text nor translation is given in the brief CD booklet. It was recorded live rather than in a studio although the audio quality is excellent and it was only the well deserved applause at the conclusion that gave the game away. With five soloists along with the combined forces of La Chapelle Royale & Collegium Vocale Gent, and the Orchestra Des Champs-Elysees this is a full-scale, modern production rather than a more intimate chamber version and one that I suspect Mendelsshohn would have appreciated. The final consideration is whether you are looking for a star name such as Bryn Terfel or Willard White, both of whom have appeared as Elijah. Petteri Salomaa is a bass from Helsinki with an extensive discography and he stands comparison with both of the more famous singers just mentioned. The choir come through loud and clear which makes this useful for those trying to learn the piece. As a mid-priced re-issue this is well worth considering if you have yet to add a recording of the oratorio to your collection although the absence of a translation of the libretto is a drawback.
