Ken is another of the plethora of home grown, talented singer/songwriters, this time from Prestwick in Scotland, where he is a worship leader at the Kingcase Parish Church. Overall, this is praise and worship with a bluesy, country feel, a mix of original compositions and reworked traditional pieces (“In The Bleak Midwinter”, “Holy Holy”, “This Train”), with two talking blues, and the title track, a magnum opus seven minutes-plus 12-bar blues. All this adds up to a good value 67 minutes for 13 songs, and by and large it’s an enjoyable listen. Some tracks are stronger than others, there’s an occasional wobbly vocal, but little to betray its grassroots origins (apart from the CD sleevenotes, which are rather scruffy). Apart from the title track, my fave song is “This Train”, which chugs along in real good ol’ boy style; the talking blues songs are an interesting idea, but I’ve heard Tom Paxton in particular elevate the genre to dizzy heights, so they inevitably suffer by comparison. Even so, despite these quibbles, a good effort.
