From the big explosion of her 1999 debut album 'Jordan's Sister' through the smaller follow up 'Grown' in 2004, Kendall Payne has repeatedly proven herself to be a songwriter capable of capturing powerful emotions and insightful commentary on the human condition. 'Paper Skin' is the perfect title for this collection of brittle, stripped down emotive songs where Kendall pulls at the heartstrings by turns inspiring and moving the listener. "Belonging" is about learning to trust once more whilst Payne tackles marriage issues on "Fail" and "Back To Normal". "Touch" is a beautiful song and is dedicated "to all who have been abused and enslaved" whilst "I Will Show You Love" is a powerful song where God steps into the album and speaks directly to the listener. In some ways the wider social issues tackled here place Payne alongside another female singer songwriter, Sara Groves, as they both tackle difficult subject matter on their latest releases. Ultimately both artists are adept at creating songs that shine with delicate hope at the heart of the songs. Payne has created a beautiful album that might not have the immediacy of some of her other work but is blessed with a richness that rewards the listener.
