Marilyn is black and once even recorded with gospel star James Cleveland (you can't have much more gospel roots cred than that). But anybody expecting if not a storefront stormer, at least something soulfully funky ala BeBe and CeCe will be sorely disappointed by The Me Nobody Knows'. Marilyn was of course once lead singer of 5th Dimension ("Up Up And Away" and all that) and her tendency to take the middle of the road comes apparent here. The production by Chris Christian is classy but bland and though she occasionally dips into something pretty soulful like on "Love Understands" more often she's closer to Sandi Patti than Twinkie Clark. All in all 'The Me Nobody Knows' sounded too safe and formulaic to hold this reviewer's attention.
