Phil Glover is a self confessed realist - "no grand illusions of stardom - simply a message to tell". His songs for the most part share that realistic approach. With a mainly light rock/funky feel he reworks the ideas of Corinthians 13 on "Love Is"; explores the darkness of loneliness in "But Love"; gets angry at the futility of conflict on "War Cry"; and questions the overreaching ambitions of man on the more atmospheric "Songs Of Distant Earth". This is not an album to set standards for the music industry - the chord progressions are a little too predictable and the melodies a trifle bland. But in "War Cry", and particularly the closing track "Innocent Man", with its fuller sound and creative use of brass, there's something worth listening to. So if you come from the Bristol area get out and support the guy.
