Formed in '97 as a side project for various members of Dream Theatre, King's X and Winger, the release of Platypus' '98 debut evidently ear-marked the start of what has thankfully become a fully fledged band in its own right. With Ice Cycles', Tabor (guitars/vocals/lyrics), Myung (bass), Sherinian (keys) and Morgenstein (drums) have come up with yet another stunning set of captivating soundscapes of awe and wonder. Less overtly progressive in nature, Platypus have opted for a subtler approach to the music this time round. Except for the tongue-in-cheek album closer "Partial To The Bean", gone are obvious lengthy jam sessions found on "When Pus Comes To Shove'. Instead, relatively shorter numbers such as "The Tower" and "Oh God" are delivered with passion and urgency, When it does come to the more lengthy compositions, the progressive phrasing is kept understated and less obvious, a welcome trait that becomes endearing with repeated listening. In Tabor, Platypus have found a solid frontman, able to blend in his trademark Beatle-esque harmonies and lush sounding guitar work, which -in keeping with the general mood of the album - is slightly darker than that found on their first project; more akin to 'Dogman' era King's X. Ice Cycles' is yet another excellent collection of songs that is bound for wide appeal.
