Reviewed by Alex Figgis What do you call a musical entity made up of four unique elements, originating from different musical strains? Platypus...without the bill. Consisting of Ty Tabor on lead vocals and guitars (King's X), John Myung and Derik Sherinian on bass and keyboards respectively (both of Dream Theater), accompanied by time keeper Rod Morgenstein (ex-Dixie Dregs/Winger), Platypus may well be considered a 'super group'...of sorts. Firstly, what you don't get: a mass of musical hype packed full of self absorbed musos who're on an ego trip. Instead, a welcome bombardment of psychedelic fused hard alternative rock, laden with great hooks, witty arrangements and sonic subtleties. Ty, John, Derik and Rod each bring out the best in each other, resulting in an exciting musical experience throughout. There are five instrumental cuts contained herein, with "Rock Balls/Destination Unknown" and "Blue Plate Special" each clocking in at over seven minutes, giving plenty of room for the band to demonstrate just how well they play as a unit; "Platt Opus" being largely an instrumental piece, with a brief factual - all be it tongue in cheek - description of the platypus (complete with bill intact). Lyrically, Ty writes with keen wit about mankind's obsession regarding other people's business ("Standing In Line"), the death of loved ones ("Bye Bye") and the 'plight' of those who roam from town to town ("Willie Brown"), to name but a few. 'When Pus Comes To Shove' displays a richly diverse musical tapestry that is full of depth and vibrancy; truly a work of art to be appreciated.
