This four-track cassette is the first recorded effort from Surrey band Salt Solution. It has grown on me steadily over the last few days or so - who knows, next week it might be up there among my favourites! The band is very English-sounding and slightly reminiscent of the Beautiful South in feel, although lead vocalist Martin Day sounds a little like Erasure's Andy Bell at times. All the songs are well written and well played, having lyrics which don't just wash over you but actually engage your brain. The most interesting lyric belongs to the song "The Day In Between". It is written from the point of view of one of the disciples, or perhaps someone who knew Jesus well, reflecting on the events of the crucifixion on the Saturday before the resurrection. It explores the feelings of grief and disillusionment that they must have felt. The song has a lovely chorus and its arrangement is strengthened greatly by the background vocals of Helen Jayne. The production work is low budget and therefore leaves quite a lot to be desired, but this didn't spoil my enjoyment of the songs. This is a good debut and I can recommend it.
