I've got a feeling that most of these have been released before, on some of the Hymnmakers series, but no matter, these timeless hymns from some of the best writers in English hymnody are perennially popular. Coupled with a choir with a reputation such as that enjoyed by the St Michael's Singers, recorded in Coventry Cathedral with the Coventry Cathedral Brass and the mighty Cathedral organ, and directed by Paul Leddington Wright, it can't fail. Or can it? It may be just my hearing that's succumbing to the march of Anno Domini, but the more recent recordings don't have the clarity of the earlier ones. Acoustics, production values or some rather substandard performances, I know not why. I suggest that you experience the St Michael's Singers via the Hymnmakers series, especially the two volumes of Charles Wesley, rather than this.
