A selection of 11 popular passiontide hymns, rounding off with the classic Stainer chorus "God So Loved The World" from his oratorio The Crucifixion. Paul Leddington Wright conducts his Coventry-based St Michael's Singers on most of them, though there are also contributions from the St Michael's Chamber Choir - presumably a cut down version of the Singers - and the trebles of Coventry Cathedral Choir. The singing is good, but I have heard better. Starting off with "When I Survey" and including "O Sacred Head Sore Wounded", "There Is A Green Hill" and "The Old Rugged Cross" among many other of your hundred-best-passiontide-tunes, this CD has all the right stuff. But is it any different, or more inspiring, or better sung than other similar products on the market? I think
probably not.
